On January 1, 2018, two job-killing Obamacare taxes that target middle class families, seniors, and small business will go into effect. One is the Health Insurance Tax, a $150 billion increase over 10 years, half of which will be paid by families earning less than $50,000, and will kill 286,000 U.S. jobs by 2023. The other is the 2.3% medical device tax that will impair the ability of some of America’s most innovative companies to continue bringing forth life-sustaining medical advances.
Given the failure of recent efforts to repeal and replace the failed Obamacare program, former Speaker William O’Brien and former Deputy Majority Leader and Ways & Means Chairman Stephen Stepanek, Chairs of the NH Right of Center Coalition, have joined with 34 other national and state conservative groups and leaders, including Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform, and the leadership of ALEC, AMAC, FreedomWorks, and the National Taxpayer’s Union, and sent a letter to Majority Leader McConnell and Speaker Ryan to urge Congress to prevent these devastating taxes from coming into effect.
As former Speaker O’Brien said, “These two ill-conceived taxes will do nothing to save Obamacare, but will certainly kill jobs in New Hampshire and throughout our country. There will come a time where Congress will have to repeal and replace this failed program, but absent the ability to do that, Congress certainly must keep it from continuing to destroy jobs and national prosperity.”
Former Deputy Majority Leader Stepanek added, "At a time when American families and businesses are facing some of the highest taxes in the world the last thing we should be doing is increasing that burden with the addition of these new taxes."
